iPad Hits Three Billion Downloads in Just One Year, Still Outgunning Android Tablets

ipad appAccording to a study by ABI Research, iPad users are estimated to have cumulatively downloaded three billion applications since the launch of the iPad in 2010. This was 19% of all cumulative downloads by Apple users. The iPhone took as long as two years before being able to achieve this level of downloads, while the iPad made it within nearly a year and a half. In comparison, Android tablets only have around 440 million downloads thus far.

Android activations top 3 millions at Christmas

samsung galaxyWriting on Google+, Rubin, Google's senior vice president of mobile, said: "There were 3.7M Android activations on 12/24 and 12/25. Congrats team-Android!"

Android had previously been averaging around 700,000 device activations every day. The Christmas numbers more than double that rate.

Apple's iOS finishes 2011 with 52% share of mobile Web browsing

ipad 2The latest figures from Net Applications show that iOS represented more than half of mobile devices seen online in December. In second place was Java ME with 21.3 percent, while Android came in third.

Apple's share slid from 54 percent in November of 2011, and is down from its high of 61.5 percent in October. But it's also up from the 46.6 percent share iOS was tracked at in February of 2011.

Breaking down iPhone versus iPad, Apple's smartphone took 25.2 percent to lead all mobile devices. The iPad, though, was the second most popular device, with a 24.5 percent representation.

High-End Brands Are Missing the Boat on Mobile, Study Finds

luxury brandsA study from New York research firm L2 notes that app investment for fashion, beauty, hospitality, watch and jewelry and retail brands is dismal. While 70% of brands have apps, the study charges that these have been “blind investments in iOS apps that lack utility and ‘stickiness.’” Of these, less than a third are commerce-enabled, and few take advantage of the unique functionality offered by smartphones, such as notifications, cameras and geolocation.

Walgreens introduces mobile coupons to encourage shopping via apps

walgreensWalgreens is adding mobile coupons that can be scanned at point-of-sale to its existing mobile applications. The coupons, which will be available from Nov. 25 to Dec. 24, will range in value from 50 cents to $5 and will be good toward a variety of products including beauty items, gifts, consumables and diapers.

Cashiers can scan the mobile coupon straight from a user’s smartphone so there is no need to clip or print coupons.

Walgreens has mobile scanning capabilities at all of the more than 7,700 Walgreens stores nationwide, making this the largest retail mobile coupon program in the United States, according to the company.

Old Navy to bolster holiday sales with in-store shopping app

old navySpecialty retailer Old Navy is upping its mobile efforts with an iPhone application designed to increase holiday sales and let consumers know about new products.

The Snap Appy app lets consumers scan products in-store to unlock season-themed surprises and rewards while shopping. Additionally, the app connects to the retailer’s mobile-optimized Web site to let users shop from home.

Coca-Cola Launches Its First U.S. QR Code Program

coca-colaMillions of Coca-Cola cups circulating this month will sport QR codes for a program that supports the brand’s holiday mascot, the polar bear.

The brand is partnering with the World Wildlife Fund for the initiative, which aims to help conserve the polar bear’s Arctic habitat. Consumers who scan the codes, which appear on cups distributed by 7-Eleven, will download a Snowball Effect by Coca-Cola app for the iPhone and iPad platforms that turns into a Facebook-connected, snowball-throwing game. Those who generate the most points in the game will win prizes including iPads (80 total will be given out) and a trip to the Arctic for two. The program runs through March.

L'Internet mobile s'envole en France

Internet mobileLes Français ont pris le train de l'Internet mobile  en marche. Et en masse ! En un an, le nombre de mobinautes - des internautes qui se connectent à un site ou une application avec un téléphone mobile - a augmenté de 5 millions en France. Au troisième trimestre 2011, 18,3 millions de personnes ont navigué sur l'Internet mobile, soit un bond de 34 % en un an, a annoncé l'institut de mesure d'audience Médiamétrie vendredi. Six millions d'entre eux se connectent tous les jours à la Toile mondiale depuis un mobile.
